A brief history of Mental Discs - The Davros Years
Seeing as Dan nicely summed up the first couple of years of Mental Discs's history I thought I would continue the story.
After a kickarse Copa Cobana and Dan's departure as captain, as well as many other loses such as Philipa, Kirsten, Mirko, Russ, Ben, Rick, and many more the team consisted of myself as Captain, Ryan as Social Sec and Duncan as fixtures and money dude. There was a few others about such as Pocket Andy, Mohawk Matt and Ginger Neil (does anyone remember him?) so no one important really.
3 not really being enough for an Ultimate Frisbee team there was some recruiting to be done. Instant additions were Bollard and Loser as well as (with the help of Ryan's big black man charm) Nikki, Rosie and Ummea. Soon to follow came some other fan favourites such as James, John, Penfold, Carpet and the Almighty Thor.
The team's first tournament of the year was Loughborough Beginners, with about 12 of us on the team, games were fairly erratic, and with most of the team having dyed their hair blue for the event it was very...........memorable. All the excitement proved too much for some and roughly £60 damage was caused to our host's house. Yet they liked us so much there were no hard feelings. This was also the first MD tourny with a proper kit (not including the disgusting bright green and orange coloured one from the Mental-Knights period the year before) and Duncan deserves special praise for not only sorting out a design, placing several orders, going to Nottingham to collecting them, but also for finding a sponsor to give us money just to put the words Stinky and Fish on the back (me, I would probably pay to have these words there!).
As far as socials went in this year highlights included going to the Union 118 style, ABC night as Christmas Trees (special mention goes to John for having the biggest "presents" of us all), a mass outing to Newcastle that very few people can remember, 8 B4 8, the 24-can challenge, and, of course, Ry's weirdest pub crawl ever. This consisted of everyone attending the social being tied together by the arms and legs and racing from one pub to the next. Starting at the Kingsway in Stoke the crawl included Harrys, the Roebuck, the Fawn & the LRV. 3 pint challenges were a must as was every drinking game we could think of. All this and you had your own pet egg to look after on the way. Best social of the year.
The nicest surprise of the year came at a tournament in Norwich where after a long drive and some tough Saturday games, we were seeded first for Sunday's games - a Mental Discs first. Since our day consisted of playing as many of our trademark points as possible (lots of Simpsons and a few Bollard in a bag points) no one could believe it. In true MD style we celebrated like bastards and I dare say drank one or two too many (well someone has to make up for John's tee-totalness). How we managed to go on to win the tournament is anyone's guess (I know most would guess that we won because of pity, or maybe because of the big black man we had, but I would like to think that sometimes good Spirit can help you to dick on a team or two).
With elections looming we once again realised that most of the people we had on the team would not be around for the following year (maybe we should try and recruit some 1st Years sometime?) but luckily we had the combined might of James, Bollard, Loser and John to take over the committee, as well as a few taggers-on including myself, Pocket Andy, Carpet - Layout King, and rare appearances from other legends. Speaking of legends - keep an eye out for the ex-Mental Disc's team - REHAB;

Well that's all I can really remember from that year of Mental Discs. I'm sure a lot more happened but I was too drunk or hung-over to keep it all inside my little brain.
With a film completed showing our exploits, a sequel on the way, another Copa to go to, and another Uni year almost complete, the team gets bigger and more fucked-up every year.
But that's not my story.
