Mental Discs first ever get together, (training session would be to strong a word to use), was held on a Wednesday afternoon with about 6 people turning up. Mental Discs was the bright idea of a guy called Raz who could throw a discs either left of right or behind his back with pin point accuracy.
The first year of the club was pretty sporadic, and was really just a bunch of mates throwing discs now and then, it was not until the second year that we got recognition form the union and hall space.
Are first tournament was Leeds Indoors in 2001 (we came last) and are first ever game was against Fusion (no prizes for who one that one), no one apart from Raz really knew what was going on and we all quickly realised that the sole purpose of us being at the tournament was to drink, and drink we did, and I believe that we still are.
We started out being called Doh (for Dist Ought to be Hear) but that was crap, and very quick, thanks to Warwick Bears we earned the name Mental Discs, mainly due the fact the Raz could throw any type of discs and we would all run around like headless chickens laying out a lot. (some things never change hey).
In are second year Raz left as Captain, and I (Dan) voted myself in as captain. We lost a lot of people at the end of the first year (all 4 of them) it was really just me Kirsten and a couple of others, it was a bit like starting again. I stayed captain in my 3rd year and we were joined by Mirco, are German import, who suggested it might be a good idea to do things like force, learn how to cut, make a stack, and even maybe a drill or two. These were new concepts that we knew nothing of, so with the help and knowledge of the German we started to dare I say it, improve, and it has to be said that Mental Discs really put itself on the map in are 3rd year by winning the Plate (10th position) at Nottingham Students Indoors. That same year so much happened and I smoked so much weed its hard to remember, but I do recall we also teamed up with Boogie Knights (Liverpool Uni.), and started playing are first outdoor games in the Midlands winter League as Mental Knights, and got are assess kicked, and found that playing outdoors in the winter was shit so we did not do it again.
At the end of my 3rd year I handed the captaincy to Dave, who then gave it to Bollared and who in turn has continued to preach the importance of the Layout, and uphold the spirit of the game by just….arsing about.
Mental Discs has always had a good reputation as a team of pisshead's and stoners that still just some times play some quality ultimate, and the rest as they say my friends…. Is history.
Thanks for reading.
